Our EuroVan

We used to have a 1966 VW Sundial Camper – birch interior, illuminated Our Lady of Guadalupe gear shift knob. I rebuilt just about everything on the van (really, even the reduction gear boxes!), drove it to work as an apprentice electrician (IBEW 46), took trips in it, had a great time in it – why we sold it, I cannot quite remember, but we sure miss it.

In 1995, we stopped in at a RV show (what????) – there we saw the VW EuroVan Camper – thought, hey, this is cool! Then we saw the price tag ($35K) and said ” no way!” (our house was not much more than that!). Fast forward to 2003, and as I was driving by Carter VW’s used car lot, I see a EuroVan and think “what the heck, see how much they want for it”. Well, it was not anywhere near $35K, and as a stood peering in the windows, I called Carter up to ask about it – the guy on the other end of the phone said “sh*t! – I was just up there dropping that off!” – seems I got there just as it was put into the lot. When the salesman arrived, I said, “what will it take to let me drive this home today?” – his response was “Don’t you think you should test drive it first?” I said, “Sure, can we go show this to my wife?” – so off we went, got her approval, went back to Carter, traded in my car, then drove home a Jetta while they did the final “punch list” items on the Van. Picked the van up a few days later, and the rest is history….

So – now we have a EuroVan, but we miss the “feeling” of our ’66, so what do we do? We start MODIFYING IT!
